The One Where she Gets the Guy
In Hollywood’s romantic-comedy, Pretty Woman, a wealthy business man
named Edward Lewis is (of course) dumped rather predictably over the phone—the
same phone call he asked her to be his escort during his business trip. His ex
was tired of being his “beck and call girl” so Edward goes out and accidentally
meets Vivian Ward, who happens to be a prostitute. The tale continues, but
eventually leads to Edward asking her to be his escort on the trip, offering to
pay her 3,000 dollars and a new, fashionable wardrobe for her. Vivian finds
herself falling in love with Edward, but when he offers to put her up in an apartment,
so she doesn’t have to live on the streets, she refuses and admits this is not
the fairy tale she dreamt of as a kid, where a knight on a white horse rescues
her. Edward decides he wants to shift the goal of the company and his partner
Phillip is furious—and believing it is all Vivian’s fault, attempts to rape
her. Fast forward, Edward arrives, punches him, Phillip leaves. Fast forward even
more, and we se Edward jumping out of a white limo sun roof and rescues Vivian,
overcoming his extreme fear of heights to help her ascend from the fire escape. The film ends with: “So what happens after he climbed up the tower and rescues her?” which
Vivian responds, “She rescues him right back.” *cue happy tears*
Okay, so yes, "Rise tales” are the happiest ending type
tales, but are they really realistic? This movie, just like Disney’s Cinderella, is the classic “rags to riches
through magic and marriage” tale, where a lowly girl attracts the charming, wealthy guy and eventually falls in love and marries them. But the question begs, can someone reach success or riches with magic, marriage, and charm? And
the answer is held in the minds of the person, to be honest. Everyone is
different, every story is different (with their falcon!), resulting in
different endings and levels of prosperity. I believe if you try hard enough,
you can succeed. I believe if you marry the right person, your life can be
magical and charming and successful, as well. And I also believe that if the cards are dealt
just right for a select few of the human population, their lives really can end up in this "rags to riches," "zero to one-hundred" type of way. Personally, I want to
believe in stories like this, because if stories like this exist, it means
people like Vivian and Edward exist and grow into better people. And also, books and movies like Cinderella and Pretty Woman are ideal, because everyone deserves to be happy, successful, and in love!
